Handsworth Recreation Group (HRG) is a voluntary sector organisation based in the Handsworth area of Birmingham. It is run by a group a young people dedicated to the betterment of the area. HRG is multi-cultural organisation with representation from all ethnic backgrounds amongst its members.
The Handsworth Recreation Group was formed by a nucleus of young people committed to the social and economic development of their generation and community. This group of young men and women has endeavoured to encourage their peers and elders to come together to discuss the future of the community in Handsworth.
Handsworth youth have been largely ignored by the institution, which has resulted in this movement forming through frustration. Awareness of the issues that affect them and the subsequent solution of problems have been a priority for the group and its members.
Detailed description:
Aims of Organisation: To reduce the rate of existing youth crime and drug misuse. To prevent the potential involvement of youth in crime and drugs misuse by keeping Youths off the streets. To provide a youth advice and support service to address the specific needs of the target group. To help and advice the Youth in accessing the educational and training opportunities for their further education, and to provide support to those already in education. Inform parents of educational opportunities for their children, and increase their awareness of the need to educate their children. Objectives of Organisation /; To provide sport and leisure activities for youth i.e.
football, cricket, badminton, table tennis, snooker, pool, summer fares, fashion shows, charity events, sports tournaments, trips, art and craft activities. To create environmental awareness activities such as plantation weeks for youth to involve them in the betterment of their own area's environment. To provide education services i.e. ESOL, Urdu classes and IT training. To provide an education advisory clinic for youth and parents on education and career options with an aim to encourage non-educated parents to educate their children.
Advice with subject/course/training and selection of educational establishment. To provide an employment advice clinic where assistance is given to youth with job searching, advice in respect of job application form filling, writing letters to employers, preparation of CV's, advice on how to perform at interviews To set up a summer school which provides educational/ leisure trips for youth to enable them to develop their personal skills, confidence and improve learning skills. To take youths to theme parks and other places to make school holidays eventful and pleasurable.
