Short profile:

Couples wanting to start a family when the male partner has had a vasectomy sterilisation have a number of options in order to achieve the best chance of a clinical pregnancy. The Glasgow Vasectomy Reversal Clinic can offer an individual and bespoke service. The clinic, a partnership between BMI Ross Hall Hospital and Glasgow Centre for Reproductive Medicine, is led by Mr Mark Underwood (Consultant Urologist) and Dr Marco Gaudoin (Consultant Gynaecologist and Medical Director of GCRM).

Detailed description:

The Glasgow Vasectomy Reversal Clinic can offer a couples a complete service to ensure the best possible clinical pregnancy rates. Because vasectomy reversal on its own doesn't guarantee a chance of a pregnancy, the GVRC will always consider each individual case from both the male and female perspective. 1. Vasectomy reversal with/without simultaneous sperm storage A vasectomy is an operation to cut, seal or block the vas deferens (tubes that carry sperm) from the testicles to the penis.

A vasectomy should be considered a permanent operation because future reversal cannot be guaranteed. However, some men decide they want the operation reversed. Approximately 15% of men use vasectomy as a form of contraception and up to 4% of these men will undergo vasectomy reversal.

2. Sperm storage or retrieval It may be appropriate to consider sperm retrieval and storage in men where the vasectomy has been performed more than 10 years ago as results from a vasectomy reversal in isolation may be as low as 50%. Storing sperm will not only reduce the need for a second operation but also reduce the anxiety for those couples where the chances of success following reversal of vasectomy may not be high.
