GARRY HARPER ORIGINAL ART

After attending Glasgow School of Art from 1984 to 1988, I followed a love of the moving image and worked in television as a senior graphic designer. Here I was involved in filming and designing title sequences, company branding and other content. Continuing to paint since leaving art school though, I decided to take the plunge 2 years ago and become a full time artist. Since then I have exhibited and sold at the RSA in Edinburgh, had works included on a BBC drama and been commissioned to paint various portraits. My work has been shown in various galleries and most recently I've had my first one man show. The two main subject areas I work in are figure painting and landscapes.

People and their lives fascinate me, especially lives that were lived years ago. The figures are inspired from various sources - I love memories, glimpses of the past. Images that capture imagination and make you wonder as to who or where. The spark could come from a sitter modelling for me or drawings from sketchbooks or found photographs. The landscapes are a mixture of sketches and images taken whilst travelling, then worked up in my studio.
