Short profile:

Frome Valley Medical Centre was opened in January 2000, bringing together the former Witney Mead surgery and Saffron surgery. It offers excellent facilities and provides a wide range of services and health care to the local community.

The practice supports the Government's NHS zero tolerance campaign. We ask patients to treat GPs and practice staff courteously, without violence or abuse.

The surgery is protected by CCTV cameras.

Home visits should only be requested for patients who are too ill to travel to the surgery. Please telephone before 10.30 am if possible. Doctors will decide whether a visit is the best way of dealing with the problem and will attend the more urgent calls first. Visits will take place in the afternoons before evening surgery, which starts at 3.50 pm. Please make every effort to attend the surgery as you will be seen earlier in the day, with the full benefit of the Medical Centre's clinical and computer back-up.

Detailed description:

The Practice was formed by Dr Donald Brown in the early 1950's, practicing from a converted bungalow in Clyde Road, Frampton Cotterell.

As the practice expanded, other partners were appointed and the practice split into two sites, 'Witney Mead' at 4 Rectory Road, Frampton Cotterell and 'Saffron' at 7 Hicks Common Road, Winterbourne.

In 2000 the Practice moved to purpose built premises in a converted farmhouse at Court Road, an appointment system was introduced and a wider team of staff developed.

Frome Valley Medical Centre is an approved training practice with a strong commitment to education and personal development. All doctors and staff have an annual appraisal and are encouraged to develop new skills which further enhance our level of services.

Two of the Partners, Dr Elaine Anderson and Dr Rob Laurence, are approved GP Trainers. With the support of their colleagues, they have successfully trained a number of Trainee Doctors over the years.

The practice also regularly trains groups of undergraduate medical students from the University of Bristol to familiarise them and provide them with an insight into the work of General Practice.

Training involves the recording of a certain number of consultations undertaken by the trainees. The patient's consent is always obtained in advance and recording's are erased at the end of the training period.

People sustaining injuries as a result of accidents need to contact the surgery before attending. Some Patients may be referred to the Minor Injuries Unit at Southmead Hospital for assessment and treatment.

It is advisable not to turn up at the surgery without booking an appointment.

The district nurses provide skilled nursing care for patients in their own homes. They care for those who are not well enough to come to the surgery and for whom it is more appropriate to be nursed in their own home. Referrals are accepted direct to the district nurses from all agencies as well as from patients and their carers.
