Levels of reported crime are closely monitored on the borough. Depending on the time of year we see different crimes occurring. It is wise for us to note these 'seasonal crime trends' and do what we can to prevent ourselves or our property from becoming easy targets.
Some of these tips may be common sense - but with very little effort it is possible to frustrate the efforts of those who are criminally inclined.
To Prevent Burglary
Make sure you close all windows when you go out. At night avoid leaving ground floor or accessible windows open. Leaving your front door open during the day will let in a cool breeze - but also a burglar.
If you are going away on holiday it is better to leave the curtains open so that your home does not look unoccupied during the day. Also remember to cancel deliveries such as milk and post if away for a longer period of time. If you have someone you trust ask them to visit your home from time to time. They can make sure any 'junk mail' has been pushed through your letter box and if needed keep your garden neat and tidy.
To Prevent Motor Vehicle Crime
Again be careful not to leave any windows open even if you are away from you car for just a few minutes. Thieves will look for any items of value left on display - especially Sat Navs, mobile phones and handbags. There is also a continuing trend where car number plates are being stolen. Watch out for a number of police initiatives this summer where we will be securing number plates using non-return screws.
To Prevent Street Robbery
It may be stating the obvious but be careful what jewellery you display when you are out and about. A gold necklace can be snatched in seconds. Tuck chains and bracelets out of sight or leave them at home.
