Food Standards Agency in Northern Ireland was launched on 3 April 2000 and is accountable both to Parliament and the Northern Ireland Assembly. Our commitment is to improve food safety and standards and protect the health of the population in Northern Ireland in relation to food.
Detailed description:
Our offices are based at Clarendon Dock, Belfast, and our roles and responsibilities include: advising Ministers on food safety and standards issues; developing policy and proposing legislation; auditing of food law enforcement activities undertaken by: district councils; the DARD Veterinary Service (meat hygiene); and DARD Quality Assurance Branch (milk and eggs); auditing of feed law enforcement activities undertaken by DARD Quality Assurance Branch; giving the public advice on food safety as well as diet and nutrition issues. The Food Standards Agency is an independent Government department set up by an Act of Parliament in 2000 to protect the public's health and consumer interests in relation to food.
