Short profile:

Acupuncture is the main treatment, and as a holistic therapy, is used in conjunction with a variety of other treatments and support. Acupuncture involves inserting fine needles to improve the flow and balance of qi. This stimulates the body to heal itself in a safe and natural way.

Because energy channels flow throughout the body, and the holistic nature of acupuncture, needles are not necessarily inserted at the site of where a problem is apparent. For instance, a digestive problem might be assisted by needles in a leg, or a headache by needles in a hand.

In addition to needles I may use other techniques such as moxa, a herb which when burning provides warmth to the body to aid the smooth flow of energy. Similarly tuina (Chinese massage), cupping and guasha therapy (a form of gentle scraping) are all sometimes used to aid qi flow.

Detailed description:

As a holistic treatment, acupuncture not only aids a wide variety of symptoms but also addresses underlying energy imbalances and so improves and maintains good health. I help patients look at all relevant parts of their life to improve and maintain physical, emotional and spiritual health. For instance, based on several thousand years of ancient Chinese medicine wisdom, I provide advice on a healthy diet and how adjusting various foods, drink and eating habits can enhance overall health as well as being part of a specific treatment plan. Acupuncture emphasises the close link between our emotions and physical and emotional health. I can help patients understand how their emotions affect them, with a view to finding ways forward to improve emotional and spiritual well-being.

I have more than 15 years experience of related practices including T'ai Chi, qi gong and meditation. I teach relaxation, breathing techniques, imagery and qi gong to those interested in learning the benefits of such practices. I have been trained in an integrated approach of two different styles of acupuncture, enabling me to address the individual needs of patients. Acupuncture regards two people having apparently the same illness, as needing different treatments because they are different people.

TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), the main style practised in China, focuses on the symptoms and is used for a variety of conditions. Five Element Constitutional Acupuncture addresses symptoms and enhances overall wellbeing. This approach focuses upon improving the energy imbalances that arise from birth or our early years.
