Short profile:

First Hydro Company is one of the UK's most dynamic electricity generators, responsible for the management and operation of the pumped storage plants at Dinorwig and Ffestiniog in the Snowdonia region of Wales First Hydro is owned by a joint venture of International Power plc and Mitsui & Co, Ltd

Detailed description:

Both Ffestiniog and Dinorwig compete daily to sell their power into the GB electricity market. Marketing and trading activity is undertaken at First Hydro’s Energy Management Centre, located at Deeside, near Chester.

Each of Dinorwig's six generating units can produce 288MW of electricity, offering a combined station output of 1728MW. Ffestiniog's four 90MW units have a combined generating capacity of 360MW.

First Hydro Company's electricity, and that of all the other power producers, is carried by National Grid Transo's high voltage transmission system of pylons, cables and transformer stations, to the regional networks which then distribute power into homes and businesses throughout the UK.

Commissioned in 1963, Ffestiniog Power Station was the UK's first major pumped storage power facility. Although of an older generation to those at Dinorwig, Ffestiniog's four generating units are still capable of achieving a combined output of 360MW of electricity - enough to supply the entire power needs of North Wales for several hours.
