FIR ENDS PRIMARY SCHOOL

In studying English pupils develop skills in speaking, listening reading and writing. It enables them

to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others effectively. All

children benefit from a Daily Literacy Hour working from a variety of texts, including fiction, nonfiction

and poetry. All children are given the opportunity to choose a reading book to share with

parents and are encouraged to read at home. To encourage good spelling habits the children are

given words to learn on a weekly basis.

The children are taught a simple, cursive style of handwriting and are taught to write clearly in

sentences with capital letters, full stops and paragraphs in the right places.

Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship enables children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We encourage children to play a positive role in

contributing to the life of the school and wider community. In so doing we help develop their sense

of self worth. We teach them how society is organized. We ensure they experience the process of

democracy in school through the School Council. We teach them about rights and responsibility.

This subject is covered in cross- curricular themes and programmes of study. These would include

Health and Safety, Environmental Issues, Relationships and the Human Body.
