Short profile:
FAITH Christian Group exists to fight poverty among the homeless, addicted and marginalised in Reading, Berkshire. FAITH is about offering love, care and friendship, without being judgmental, as well as practical help, especially food. FAITH Christian Group was started in 1990 as a response to a need which its founder, Jim McConnell, saw on the streets of Reading. Initially FAITH consisted of Jim walking around the streets of Reading with some blankets and a flask of soup, serving those whom he met, and offering them friendship. In the beginning, the FAITH office was based in the front room of his house and both we and Reading owe him a debt of gratitude for pioneering this work.
Detailed description:
FAITH is a registered charity supported and run by members of Congregations across and outside of Reading. We have a small part-time paid staff, but rely on dedicated and committed volunteers. We are non-denominational, committed to expressing the love and compassion of Christ to anyone in need, irrespective of colour, creed or ethnicity. FAITH then went mobile with the purchase of what was to become the Candle Tea Bar.
This has been out in Reading Town Centre on Sunday afternoons since the closure of the St Andrew's drop-in. It has also been used at events such as the Reading Rock Festival, the West Reading Carnival, and for children's outreach on some of the local housing estates. When Jim stepped down from running FAITH in 1998, the project manager's role was taken on by Paul Hughes.
Paul served us faithfully for several years. Whilst initially still based at Jim's house, we moved to premises at Chatham Street in Reading which we shared with Christian Community Action (CCA) for about two and a half years.
