Short profile:
We know the world is a much better place when the mainstream knowledge economy embraces the voices at the fringe. Those on the margins of society are by definition, extraordinary. They are resourceful, innovative and full of the discordant ideas that are required to help us shift our societal and institutional cultures to make the world a better and fairer place.
We work on both supply and demand sides to catalyse this change and support the participation of fringe voices in the mainstream. We also create markets to spark and promote cross-fertilisation of ideas and disciplines, principally through our Cineforum format.
Detailed description:
Knowledge is fair when everyone has the opportunity to create, disseminate and apply it. This in turn produces societies that are healthy, secure and happy. Most importantly, fair knowledge allows us all to celebrate difference and value the innate being and becoming of every different person.
Fresh ideas come from the fringe, where adversity and often resource challenges are the seeds for innovation and alternative ways of doing things.
As well as being one of the drivers of this breadth of ideas and experiences, lack of capacity is conversely also a barrier to entry into the mainstream. We help to build this capacity and make individuals and groups ready for mainstream engagement.
This takes the form of film and media training to help express, opinionate and disseminate; leadership training that raise aspirations, skills and confidence; and other activities designed to enhance participation in mainstream society. We give people tools to overcome disadvantage or barriers to entry. Despite the value of these voices in the mainstream, we don’t want to perpetuate the fringe or put it on some sort of pedestal - it’s not fun being there, the fun begins when they can engage with the bigger world.
Building employability skills, networks and the confidence to contribute to society is a core part of all our work - for example, Nobody’s Perfect was a project that began with a national competition in the UK for creative young people - we mentored the 10 finalists to produce films using their script, music or directing skills. More importantly, we arranged a West End Red Carpet Premiere so that they could experience the glamour and confidence of being stars - this creates massive self-esteem and helped these young people to think of themselves as potentially important and core members of the UK film industry.
