Short profile:

Essex Fresh Start is a 'Good with Outstanding features' (Ofsted 2007) registered day school catering for SEN Pupils in KS2, 3 & 4. Established in September 2004 as a pilot project for Essex County Council, we now teach 40 pupils across three Essex sites in Chelmsford, Colchester and Mersea. Each tutor group has a teaching team of three (Teacher and two Learning Support Mentors) supported by specialist teachers, our Pupil Facilitator and the Headteacher.

Over five years, Essex Fresh Start has demonstrated that it is a high quality school delivering good outcomes for pupils. All pupils were originally referred by Essex County Council although we now take referrals from neighbouring Local Authorities and County Councils.

Our school has a very strong record of not excluding the pupils they work with. Many of the pupils have a long history of rejection and exclusion.

Detailed description:

Our Vision is to provide high quality education services, which is personalised and achievement driven to ensure our pupils are supported to achieve their full potential. We will continue to develop our many services with vulnerable children and young people in a flexible and innovative way. Our staff, and their dedication and commitment to the children and young people we serve, are crucial to the quality of our work and, as such, we will do all we can to encourage, support, challenge and train them for the important work they do. Our vision is to be recognised and respected as the leading provider of specialist education for children and young people with a wide range of SEBD needs. We aspire to engage with and inform best practice at a national level.

Our School Outreach Service provides intensive support on a one to one or small group basis for pupils who are unable to initially manage a special school setting. Our experience of referrals by Local Authorities to our schools indicate that pupils present with a number of issues, which can impinge on their entry into a school environment. We offer full-time or part-time programmes both attached to our Essex Fresh Start Independent School as well as stand alone services for Essex CC and other surrounding County Council's and Local Authorities. These education programmes provide one-to-one and small group education for excluded and non-attending pupils accross all of the Key Stages.

We believe that with the help and support of others, we can meet all the needs of every pupil. The two main sources of support and help to us in our work with our pupils are their families and careers along with Essex County Council. We encourage parents and carers to play an active role in their child’s education and ensure mutually supportive home-school links.
