Short profile:

Herefordshire Council originally set up ESG Herefordshire Ltd to breathe new life into the economy of Hereford and the county, through the regeneration of the 100-acre Edgar Street Grid development – the biggest since the cathedral was built in the 12th century.

ESG has been superseded by Hereford Futures, whose role is much wider in seeking to secure private sector investment and deliver new opportunities for the whole of Hereford – while protecting and promoting the special character of the city’s historic core.

Detailed description:

Retail and leisure is a key element in regeneration plans and a new high quality department store, fashion stores, a new food store and a multiplex cinema will replace the dilapidated livestock market, situated in the centre of the city. This high value development supports many other schemes and programmes that are crucial if Hereford is to regain and retain its rightful place as a thriving economic centre in the region.

High quality anchor stores and new household name shops will help revitalise the whole city centre – drawing in tens of thousands of extra regular shoppers to support the local economy. Research has identified the lack of premium brands in the city, currently at 11 per cent compared with 23 per cent in similar towns. To see Stanhope’s plans click here.

More shoppers would spend more in city shops, including those in the historic core of Hereford. All this means more jobs and more prosperity for everyone as regeneration has a positive impact on the linkages within the wider Herefordshire economy.
