Short profile:

The Department of the Environment’s main responsibilities are carried out by three Executive Agencies and a core policy and resources group comprising six divisions. Its main functions include:

Planning development and control; Driver and vehicle licensing and testing; Protection, conservation and promotion of the natural environment and built heritage; Planning and environmental policy; Road safety policy; and

Local government policy.

The Department's aim is to contribute to a better and safer environment which will support a vibrant and dynamic economy, and to support the delivery of a system of strong and effective local government.

Detailed description:

Objectives:

To protect and promote the natural environment and built heritage; To plan and manage development in a sustainable way which is responsive to the needs of the community; To reduce road deaths and serious injuries; and

To support the delivery of a system of strong and effective local government.

The Minister has overall political responsibility and accountability for all the Department's activities.

The Permanent Secretary, Leo O'Reilly is the Minister's principal adviser on all aspects of the Department's responsibilities and is the Accounting Officer for all Departmental expenditure. He is assisted by the Deputy Secretary and by the Chief Executives of Planning Service, Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA), and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) who are also Accounting Officers for the expenditure of their respective Agencies; and by Directors who manage the following divisions:

Planning and Natural Environment Division; Road Safety Division; Local Government Policy Division; Climate and Waste Division; Finance and Business Planning Division; and

Human Resources and Organisational Change Division.

At official level, the work of the Department is co-ordinated and monitored by the Departmental Board. The role of the Departmental Board is to provide corporate leadership within policies determined by the Minister.
