Emma is a member of the British Acupuncture Council and has Personal Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance. Members follow a strict Code of Practise and Ethics which includes confidentiality and communication with other health professionals. Emma’s interest in Chinese Medicine began while she was working in Indonesia as a teacher in the mid 90s, “ I used to get bad colds when the wet season started and one day when I was coughing and sneezing, an American friend whisked me off to see an old Chinese doctor who lived locally. I found the whole experience intriguing and was amazed how quickly I felt better afterwards.”
Detailed description:
After returning to the UK in 1997, Emma began her career in energetic medicine by qualifying as a reflexologist. She then went on to complete her licentiate in acupuncture at The College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading, one of the leading colleges in Europe and a British Acupuncture Council accredited college. The course included the requisite western medical sciences and combined two types of traditional acupuncture, 5 Element and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Since setting up her acupuncture clinic in Cardiff, as part of her continuing professional development, Emma regularly attends seminars and training workshops in all areas of Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practised and refined in China for at least 2500 years. In Chinese Medicine, vital life energy known as qi, circulates in the body through meridians, also known as pathways or channels.
When energy is flowing smoothly, we are nourished on a physical, mental and emotional level; we flourish as human beings. However, this energetic flow can sometimes get stuck or become deficient, manifesting in the body as physical discomfort or pain. Or we might feel depressed, anxious or simply just not our normal selves. Trauma, infections, stress and poor diet are some of the causes of ill health in Chinese Medicine. Treatment involves the insertion of fine needles in the skin which stimulates and harmonizes the energy in the meridian.
This improves the functioning of the organ the meridian flows through. Once a more balanced flow is established during a course of treatment, health is restored to the individual. When a person comes to see an acupuncturist, they might present with many symptoms and often a complex pattern of disharmony is recorded by the practitioner. Each person is different, so the degree of disharmony is noted, and as a result, the person receives a truly individualised and tailored treatment.
