Short profile:
Ellern Mede provides a specialist treatment service for young people (children and adolescents) suffering from eating disorders such as, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and other disorders involving eating difficulties for example pervasive refusal syndrome (PRS), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS, “ME”, “post viral fatigue syndrome”), conversion disorder and depression.
The service offers a Milieu programme, a Rapid Response programme and a High Dependency programme. These are three different in-patient treatment programmes that each includes individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy and other therapies such as Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). There is also a school on site (Ellern Mede School). We provide a training programme for professionals and we have a comprehensive research programme which includes a project to develop CRT (Cognitive Remediation Therapy), a new therapy for the treatment of eating disorders.
Detailed description:
The Ellern Mede Centre for Eating Disorders was set up in 2001 to offer a specialist treatment service for children and young people with eating disorders.
There is no catchment area and we have accepted referrals from all parts of the UK, from British nationals living abroad and foreign nationals living in Britain.
Eating disorders are extraordinarily complex illnesses which present with abnormalities in physical and psychological functioning. The physical complications have the potential to cause permanent damage and in some cases are life-threatening. The causes are complex and multi-factorial including genetic, neurodevelopmental and environmental factors. They require a comprehensive response including medical, psychiatric, psychological, social and educational interventions.
We hope we have established ourselves as a centre of excellence and would like to think that we are among those providing the best standards of care to young people receiving treatment for child and adolescent onset eating disorders.
We have recently extended our service in response to requests from referrers and commissioners and have developed three discrete programmes, the Milieu programme, the Rapid Response programme and the High Dependency programme.
The Milieu programme is based at Ellern Mede, Totteridge, the Rapid Response and High Dependency programmes are based at Ellern Mede, Ridgeway, a site acquired specifically for this programme.
We have also established an active research programme and a training programme.
