Derek trained with a city firm where he obtained all round experience in every aspect of accounting, taxation and auditing. Audit clients ranged from small charities, through SMEs up to large public companies including some of the top FTSE 100.

Having qualified in 1972 he left to work as in-house accountant for a group of design companies. Here he gained a knowledge of business that proved invaluable when it came to advising clients after returning to professional practice.

The practice now serves some 500 clients from sole traders through partnerships to limited companies all with a wide range of activities. Each client is allocated a member of staff to monitor and control the flow of the work through the practice.

In a short space of time, a business can alter direction dramatically, have its very survival threatened, grow in size and value, and offer record returns. Throughout all these events, however, pre-planning and getting the right advice is crucial. It is important to move quickly and dynamically in order to see business opportunities come to fruition.
