Short profile:
There are 577 pupils at Denstone College 374 are boys and 203 girls, 164 are in the 6th Form and roughly 25% of all pupils are boarders.
No one would dispute that the needs of eighteen year olds and eleven year olds are very different. That’s where the College’s innovative "three School system" really sets us apart from other schools.
All the Houses are mixed - girls and boys, day pupils and boarders. In every House there is a great sense of pride and purpose, particularly when girls and boys are representing their House in a competition. Every term there are a variety of House competitions in a range of sports from Netball to Hockey and Rounders to Rugby. The House swimming, House athletics, and House cross country competitions involve both boys and girls. There are also House music and drama competitions, and a House Effort Cup, awarded for academic work. Every year each House has a House dinner, a celebration of the year's highlights.
Detailed description:
Our pupils are organised by School, or age, rather than house, as far as boarding, prep and socialising are concerned. The Junior School houses our youngest pupils, who join us at the age of 11, and remain there until they are ready to enter the fourth form. Our GCSE students can be found in the Middle School, where a more serious, focused atmosphere supports them in their endeavours to produce some of their best work during these academically crucial years. Once in the Sixth Form, students progress to the Senior School where they are able to manage their time in readiness for AS and A2 examinations and where they begin to prepare for university and college life.
It is important to note though, that the House system runs comfortably alongside this structure, with all pupils belonging to one of our six Houses. Pupils compete for their House in a variety of competitions, and also take part in House social events.
Both pupils and parents tell us that this system works well, and recent Yellis
attitudinal research confirms that our pupils are happy at Denstone.
The School operates a number of Policies for the protection of its pupils and staff.
Boarding is central to life at Denstone and the boarders are at the heart of the college, whose presence anchors the social and cultural fabric of the school. The hallmark of boarding is the provision of a safe, caring and friendly environment offering a wealth of opportunity for personal development. The college operates as a small community with all residential staff helping to provide a positive environment for the nurture of individual students. Boarders at Denstone are happy, healthy and trusting of each other and the staff. Relationships are based on openness, trust and respect. Parents are also an integral part of our community and are always welcome to visit and attend the many college functions.
