Back in 1964 I began making pots with a strong commitment to producing, by hand, practical functional pots. I firmly believed then, as now, that pots come best alive and give most pleasure when handled and used as part of daily life. I have great affection for these kinds of pots and a deal of satisfaction in their making. It’s my hope that something of both these feelings comes through into the things I make, giving them a character, subtlety and gentle personality.
Though a small workshop I produce an exceptionally wide range of pots, over sixty separate items at present, for storing, cooking and serving food including plates which, for whatever reason, many hand potters resist making. Most of the range is made in reasonable quantity for which additions or replacements can be had. I also make pots for the house in limited numbers and one-off pieces.
Detailed description:
Above all, I try to keep in focus the end user so that pots come easily and comfortably to the hand, pour well, cook well, are durable and ovenproof, qualities that help fit them into the context of lives outside my workshop. I try and make them look good too. It’s not a compromise between self-expression and function, more a responsibility which good craftsmanship has always understood and accepted.
Functional pots-
They are all stoneware, high fired, tough, durable and safe in ovens, microwaves and dishwashers.
Many of the pots are available in the other glazes shown.
The workshop is open without appointment during shop opening hours. It is a fascinating old building with a long tradition of craft working. For over two hundred years until 1962 it was an blacksmiths and ironworker’s forge.
Visitors are welcome to look round it, to view the kiln and equipment and to watch whatever work is in progress at the time.
Opening Times:
Monday to Saturday from 9am until 6pm. Sundays by arrangement.
