Detailed description:
C.R. Smith has been involved in the tunnelling industry for over 30 years. Chris Smith was the Chief Engineer and Engineering Director of C.V. Buchan, one of the world’s largest suppliers of tunnel linings, for 27 years where he was responsible for the company’s complete technical operation on all projects.
Chris Smith has developed and pioneered a number of innovative lining concepts, including the design and use of trapezoidal segments, the concept of non-ferrous location dowels, fast thread bolt systems and grout /lifters as well as numerous segment handling and lifting systems.
He has been involved in the detailed design and specification of the linings systems on numerous contracts in the United Kingdom and overseas and has gained extensive experience of every type of Tunnel Boring Machine and Lining System. He has been involved “hands on” with many contracts solving their specific design and manufacturing requirements. In addition to segmental linings Chris Smith has considerable experience with the design and manufacture of jacking pipes being involved at the very beginning in the design and development of the modern pipe jacking systems.
In addition to his expertise in segmental lining design, he has a detailed knowledge of mould design, manufacturing techniques and of the system compatibility issues involved in handling and erecting segments. His knowledge of all the aspects of the system enable him to provide a successful lining solution from design to construction by ensuring that the segments incorporate all the geometric features and fixing details required to promote efficient handling and erection.
The experience gained by Chris Smith in engineering these hundreds of different schemes, both with clients and contractors, has provided an extremely wide knowledge of the industry.
