Short profile:
The first hospital in Crawley opened in 1896. It was started by Sarah Robinson in a private house in Robinson Road, following a suggestion by Dr Timothy Martin. It had two wards, one for men and one for women, with two beds in each ward, and gradually grew into a small cottage hospital with fourteen beds. At the end of the last century, Crawley had a population of approximately 500 people.
Detailed description:
Crawley Hospital currently provides a full acute hospital service with an accident and emergency department, an acute assessment unit, an intensive care unit, a theatre suite and a full range of diagnostic services. There are also outpatient and therapy services. Horsham comprises a community hospital with a weekday nurse-led minor injuries unit and full diagnostic services.
The beds are for care of the elderly and GPs' patients. There are rehabilitation, therapy and chiropody services available as well as a new outpatients' department.
Beech Community Clinic provides family planning and is a base for school and district nurses as well as health visitors, who care for patients in the community.
