Short profile:

Norton Church of England Primary school near Gloucester. This happy, positive school aims to provide an excellent broad and balanced education with an ethos of respect and a strong sense of values underpinning all learning.

We have a dedicated staff - both teaching and non- teaching who provide a high quality of education, ensuring that our

children are being challenged and stimulated to achieve their potential both in their curricular and non- curricular activities. This is further supported by parents, governors and a very active Friends of Norton School.

Detailed description:

Norton C of E Primary is set in the heart of Norton village, and the school utilises this location to good effect in its teaching. Children progress from the age of four until they leave for secondary school.

Sound Christian values underpin the whole of our school life, and the values of justice, trust, friendship and hope are core to our teaching. We are small enough to care, yet big enough to cope with around 100 pupils.

The school has a strong belief in being a learning school; that the school learns from its own experience, those who work within it and the encouragement from those outside.

There is a good ratio of Teacher Assistants in each class with a wide range of expertise to meet all challenges.

Ofsted reports that the school achieved excellent results year on year, and progress made enabled children to leave Norton well-prepared for learning in Secondary School. Ofsted 2006 found "All children are set challenging targets which motivate them to hard work".

We have a good liaison with Secondary Schools, with a Mathematics teacher for the more gifted and French teacher both visiting from a local secondary school. Y6 also visits the nearby schools to familiarise themselves with their facilities.

Children being engaged in their learning through a wide and varied, rich curriculum, we believe is key, and therefore ensure culture - music and theatre, French, gardening, sport etc. are important to complement their academic achievements.

A good selection of after-school clubs are offered including choir, drama, art, chess, sports, magazine, country-dance, and homework – something to interest just about everyone. Children also run their own lunchtime clubs such as draughts and storytelling.

The school has a tradition of putting on a Junior Shakespeare play by the older children every year, which is always well received by parents. Costumes, scenery and programmes are all produced by pupils, and infants take part in a Christmas play each year.
