Short profile:

Your first acupuncture appointment at Arundel or Chichester Acupuncture Clinic will take 90 minutes. You will be asked about your current condition and medical history, then there will be a short physical examination which will include taking pulses on each wrist and looking at your tongue. An individual diagnosis and treatment plan can then be made.

When the acupuncture points have been chosen, the needles stay in for 20 minutes. Treatments can also include Tui Na (Chinese medical massage), auricular acupuncture or moxa.

A British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) member, Sophie Fergusson graduated from the International College of Oriental Medicine, abides by the Council’s Code of Safe Practice and is fully insured. Only the finest quality single-use, sterile and disposable needles are used.

Detailed description:

Acupuncture is widely considered to be beneficial for a range of illnesses and symptoms, from clearly defined complaints such as headaches, neck/back pain through to more general feelings of ill health such as nausea or low energy. It is increasingly used by women as part of a conception programme and to support them during pregnancy. Acupuncture has been acknowledged by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to benefit a variety of illnesses (including allergies, anxiety, asthma, coughs, colds and flu, constipation and diarrhoea, depression, gynaecological conditions, insomnia, low immunity, PMS, sciatica, tendonitis). Visit the WHO website to view 'Acupuncture Review and Analysis of Reports on Controlled Clinical Trials'. Acupuncture, the most widely recognized aspect of Chinese Medicine, has been in use for over 2000 years.

It is based on the concept of Qi – the body’s motivating energy - which flows through the body in a network of acupuncture meridians. When the flow of Qi is diminished or blocked, illness, discomfort or pain may result at a physical, mental or emotional level. Many factors, such as poor nutrition, infections, trauma or hereditary influences, as well as stress, overwork and our emotions can all disturb the delicate balance of our health. Chinese acupuncture aims to influence the resulting imbalance of Qi/energy by using ultra fine needles inserted at specific acupuncture points along the energy pathways, with the objective of stimulating the body’s own natural healing response.

An acupuncture treatment is aimed at the root of any condition, not just the symptoms, and this approach can lead to a more permanent resolution of the problem. Because good health is not just the absence of pain or disease, many people use acupuncture as an ongoing therapy to promote and maintain their health.
