Short profile:

Chatham Royal Naval Dockyard closed in 1984, ending 400 years of shipbuilding history. Part of the Dockyard was retained as a commercial port, and part became The Historic Dockyard, maintaining the heritage and the many fine Georgian buildings for public benefit.

The remaining 140 hectares (350 acres) became Chatham Maritime, one of the largest urban regeneration schemes in the country. The completed Estate will eventually house over 2000 new homes, a university campus, a shopping centre, offices, a leisure facility and a 500-berth marina.
