Short profile:
Celtic Energy Limited is the leading Coal Mining Company in South Wales. We produce over 1 million tonnes of high quality coal per year from our sites in South Wales for domestic, industrial and electricity generation demand in the UK and elsewhere in Europe.
Celtic Energy Limited operates surface coal mining sites and a coal washery at Onllwyn, near Neath, where the coal is processed and despatched by road and rail to customers throughout Europe.
Celtic Energy Limited plans and operates its sites such that environmental impact is minimised and sites are restored to a number of land uses, including agriculture, forestry and local amenity such as wetlands, tree plantations and other forms of development.
Detailed description:
Celtic Mining Group Limited (CMGL) was formed in 2004 by Richard Walters as a vehicle for acquiring the entire share capital of Celtic Group Holdings Limited, which in turn owns Celtic Energy Limited, the principal operating company of the group.
Celtic Energy Limited is the successor in South Wales to the former British Coal Corporation that was privatised by the Government in 1994 and was responsible for all of British Coal’s surface coal mining activities in South Wales.
Owner and Managing Director Richard Walters is a member of the Walters family which owns the Walters Group of companies that include a major civil engineering and plant hire company operating out of South Wales.
Celtic Energy has a substantial reserve base of low sulphur, low ratio coal to guarantee the success of the company for the foreseeable future. This coal reserve from the current sites and from the company’s land interests will maintain a supply of quality coal to the domestic and industrial markets of power generation, steel making, cement production and other industries.
Celtic Energy employs over 250 personnel and over 100 contractors personnel at its sites, at the Onllwyn Washery and at its head office in Caerphilly. Locally based engineering and other industries provide additional employment within the South Wales communities in support of the Celtic Energy operations.
The sites have skilled management teams, consisting of Mine Managers, Engineering Managers, fitters, heavy plant operators and administrative personnel. Site management are supported by a skilled team of planners, estate managers, accountants, and coal processing and sales personnel.
