Cartmel Priory Church of England School is a community school of which we are all justifiably proud. It has a committed and caring staff and is strongly supported by both its local primary schools and its parents. This enables us to quickly get to know our students and helps us to provide them with a supportive and caring environment from the moment they start school.
Detailed description:
The school was formerly a technology college but was given permision by the DCSF to become a science college in September 2008 and is the only secondary school in Cumbria to have successfully applied for a change of designation to date.
Specialist College for Science focuses on the sciences and mathematics. Cartmel Priory School is totally committed to providing a strong curriculum and a full programme of enrichment opportunities in all areas of the curriculum. Science status will however allow the school to provide additional resources in this area of the currciulum. For example we are one of the few small secondary schools offering triple award science within core currciulum time.
The science department has recently participated in master classes aimed at gifted and motivated students who would benefit from meeting and working with like-minded students from similar schools in Cumbria. The school has also set up a successful science and engineering after school club and is looking at other ways of broadening science provision and encouraging students to take up careers in science and engineering.
The science laboratories are light and roomy and the mathematics suite has also recently been enlarged and refurbished. The school has also purchased two sets of laptops for students as well as improving core ICT facilities over the last few years.
