Short profile:
Siop Cariad is the home for our products sold to raise funds for the work of The Myosotis Trust a charity I started in 1996 to improve the lives of the poor and sick of Eastern Romania.
One of the early projects started in Romania to help provide an income for the poor was a kitchen-table craft initiative where women sewed designs in cross stitch to make greetings cards, book marks, aprons and bread baskets as well as traditional tatting work. The products were sold at fund raising functions in the UK whenever volunteers had the opportunity.
Detailed description:
I had the good fortune to meet Georgita Marangoci, a self-taught wood sculpture and over the years created a small wood shop employing four people. All the wooden items on the web site come from that small source in Barlad near the eastern Romanian border with Russian Moldova; one of the most deprived areas of Romania.
I also worked with Nellu Gradianu a Romanian Iconographer and subsequently supported a number of Iconographers in Romania and Belarus; the shop displays many beautiful works which are not all shown on this site.
In 2004 I opened Siop Cariad in Machynlleth Wales as a place where customers could see and buy our products. In order that sufficient income was generated to fund the shop I also introduced other products as many as possible supporting the work of other charities and Fair Trade.
Although Romania entered the EU in 2007 the work of the charity is still essential and all the profit from sales made will be donated to The Myosotis Trust www.myosotistrust.org.uk.
