Short profile:
Canonbury is a community primary school right in the heart of Islington. It serves a diverse and vibrant community and parental engagement in the life of the school is exceptional and a tradition that we work hard to maintain. The school has a long tradition, having been founded in the latter part of the 19th Century, and the site benefits from some extensive outdoor play space.
The school building is in the Victorian board school design and stands proudly overlooking the Union Chapel. Transport links for the school are good with the location being close to both Essex Road and Highbury and Islington Stations. Upper street with its excellent bus links and shops and restaurants is also a short walk from the school.
School tours, for people considering Canonbury as a choice for their child, are held on Wednesday afternoons.
Detailed description:
Canonbury Primary School will be a special place full of learning, laughter, friendship and fun where children are happy and valued, feel safe and respect others.
At Canonbury, we aim to provide the best primary education in a stimulating environment, so that every child realises his or her potential. We will instil a love of learning inspired by quality teaching, nurturing and developing individual strengths and talents. We believe every child is entitled to enjoy his or her childhood. We will encourage and celebrate creativity, original thinking and imagination as well as effort and achievement. We will teach the importance of moral values and showing consideration for others.
At the end of their time at Canonbury, our children will be confident and rounded young people ready to seize the opportunities that lie ahead of them. Our vision is to equip all our children with the knowledge, skills and values they will need to lead happy and rewarding lives.
The school day starts for all pupils at 8:55am, and finishes at 15:20 for the younger children and at 15:30 for those children in Key Stage 2. On wet days the school will open at 8:40am for pupils. At all other times the children will be collected from the playground by their class teacher. Every day starts with an assembly for the children in Key Stages One and Two. The children then will have four or five lessons throughout the day. The lessons will include daily lessons in Literacy and Numeracy, Phonics and Guided Reading. In the afternoons we follow the Creative Curriculum, including science and investigation, humanities, personal, social and health education, the arts and physical education.
All the children have an hour for lunch and they are welcome to have a free school dinner or bring a packed lunch.
