Detailed description:
Our website is very popular with children, parents, friends and the local community. In the first year we had over 40.000 hits! If you want to know what we do at Brookside please look at the Class Pages and the Headteacher's Blog. These are updated regularly so you get a good picture of life at Brookside.
Brookside is a unique school in Somerset in that it has the Children’s Centre on the same site and offers Specialist Provision classes within the main stream of the school. There are two classes, an Early Years and Key Stage 1 class and a Key Stage 2 class. As a team we are known as The Seedlings.
The Early Years and Key Stage 1 class follows a Foundation Stage style curriculum that offers learning through play, experience and exploration. The pupils are encouraged to develop independent skills within their social and self help development. This is achieved through modelling and ….
The Key Stage 2 class follows the Equals Schemes of work where appropriate and the National Curriculum.
Assessments are within P Scales or the National Curriculum targets.
Communication is of the utmost importance within the Specialist Provision and all staff have a qualification in Somerset Total Communication. Photographs, symbols, signing, objects of reference and simple language are used throughout the team. Each pupil has his/her own personal curriculum that is developed to best meet his/her needs in learning and development.
We have links with relevant therapists who support the children by developing personal programmes for the staff to follow. The Speech Therapist visits weekly to assess and discuss progress.
We have a wonderful multi-sensory room that supports all sensory curriculum as well as a soft play area that is in the process of being completed.
The children have access to the main stream of the school as and when it is appropriate to them.
