Short profile:

The Bristol Environmental Technologies Sector (BETS) is a trade association and sector partnership between businesses, academia, investors, local authorities, regional and national agencies promoting the growth of the environmental technologies and services sector in the Bristol city-region.

Detailed description:

BETS is governed by a business-led Executive Group of 15 members, which meets monthly. It is serviced and financially supported by Bristol City Council and individual event sponsors. A bi-annual Members’ Forum is also convened.

Our Mission & Objectives:

Support the development of environmental technologies and services in the Bristol region

Encourage the adoption of these technologies and services by commercial, industrial and institutional end-users seeking to reduce their carbon footprint

Promote Bristol as a centre of excellence for sustainability to wider UK and international audiences

Facilitate effective networking, knowledge exchange and practical business collaborations between BETS members and between BETS as a group and wider networks, for mutual advantage

The Bristol area has an estimated 300-plus companies in the environmental technologies sector, with significant clusters located in Avonmouth, the City Centre and Clifton. Across the West of England, the total ETS employment is estimated at 13,600 jobs. Despite an uncertain economy, the sector is still likely to grow, due to increased legislation, greater research and a general shift towards more sustainable modes of production, development and consumption.

The proportion of the workforce employed in ETS in Bristol and the West of England is about 2.8%, which is above the regional and national average. The region includes world-class organisations that specialize in renewable energy, waste management and recycling, energy control and sustainable transport. The sector is underpinned by the strong presence of a number of global, multi-disciplinary environmental consultancies.
