Short profile:
Brightside Nursey Infant School is over 120 years old and is situated on the eastern edge of Sheffield, overlooking the Meadowhall Shopping Centre.
The school is somewhat separated from its catchment by a busy road, and serves an area of privately owned and rented accomodation.
Brightside Nursery Infant school is a large stone built school with a separate Nursery/Childrens centre building which has its own playground. School has a large yard to play in at break times.
'We like to play in our little wooden houses and swing on the bars.
We have a wildlife garden which the children enjoy. We grow fruit and vegetables of all varieties, and we all enjoy, looking for mini beasts and different kinds of plants.
Detailed description:
At Brightside NI school we will provide a safe, secure, clean, bright and well resourced environment. All our children will be happy, well behaved and reach their potential in all aspects of their development.
The curriculum is taught through creative topics such as 'Singing the River' and 'Bridges'.Many of the topics are about and therefore make use of the local environment such as the River Don.
Each half term there is a planned visit for Y1 and Y2 to enhance learning by providing first hand experience, such as visiting Kelham Island, the Victorian classroom and the theatre.
Reception children have a visit once per term but like the nursery as many visitors as possible are invited to talk to the children.
The school's wild life garden is used to study mini beasts and plant life.
All children are taught music by the music teacher. We also have external artists and musicians to enrich the curriculum such as African Ark.
All children have the opportunity to perform for their families twice per year in the Harvest and Christmas celebrations.
There is a variety of lunch time and after school clubs for Y1 and Y2: games; art; cookery; computer; gymnastics; cheer leading; dance; gardening; Active Archie and Family Fitness.
There are holiday transition activites and trips.
Y2 children have the opportunity to experience a residential visit to Whirlow Farm to develop independence and life skills and to be a playground buddy and a monitor.
