Short profile:
Did you know that most mothers stopped breastfeeding before they wanted or intended to because they had to return to work or felt uncomfortable doing so in public? The National Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme aims to champion and improve the supports available to mothers to exercise their right to breastfeed their babies when they are out and about. Many businesses and other venues have an open attitude to breastfeeding, but women have no way of knowing this. Becoming breastfeeding welcome and putting up the breastfeeding welcome signs and logos will let them know that they are welcome. It will promote your business or service and you will become part of a nationwide positive health campaign, what’s more it can be free!
Detailed description:
63% of breastfeeding mothers report that they have been on the receiving end of unsupportive comments or behaviour while breastfeeding in a public place. Whilst most places have an open attitude, not all women know this, so it is important to encourage all businesses to become breastfeeding welcome and welcome these mums into their venues. Breastmilk is the perfect food for babies, the qualities in Breastmilk which protect babies cannot be found in any other milk product. Experts, including the World Health Organisation, strongly recommend that babies be fed exclusively on breast milk for at least their first six months of life. Breastfeeding has been shown to reduce the rates of diarrhoea and vomiting, respiratory and urinary tract infections, asthma and eczema in babies. It is the most important thing a mother can do to improve the lifelong health of her child. The aim of the Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme is to give all mothers this chance.
Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme is coordinated by the NCT who developed it on behalf of the Breastfeeding Manifesto Coalition (BMC) with the support of other BMC members. We are grateful to NHS Camden for their support for the pilot of the Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme. Why become Breastfeeding welcome? There are many reasons for your venue or business to become breastfeeding welcome. It makes a real improvement to customer/client service. Training staff to be welcoming and helpful to breastfeeding mothers encourages them to be more helpful and considerate to all customers. This will boost customer satisfaction and loyalty which is great for your business.
It can attract a new customer/client base. can attract a new customer/client base When new mothers find a place that welcomes them to feed their babies, they pass on the good news and customer numbers grow as a result. Their visits are not usually at the busiest time of day. This means more custom during quiet times for your business.
