Short profile:
We have been aiming to raise standards in English and Mathematics so that all pupils make very good progress. Those who do not are then identified and helped. Central to this is the need to continually assess where each pupil is in their learning and to communicate next steps clearly. We have been developing a whole-school method of recording progress on a computer programme.
We have reviewed and revised our system for school self-review so that leaders can ascertain areas of strength and areas for development as clearly and efficiently as possible.
We have been raising standards in Information and Communication Technology and Science by transferring the practices developed in work on English and Mathematics. Our aim is for all pupils to make good progress in ICT and Science.
Detailed description:
Through well-established links with a local outdoor education centre children undertake orienteering and canoeing courses. In addition there are chess and Spanish clubs and an annual cycling proficiency course. There are opportunities for pupils to learn to play the recorder, violin, cello, guitar, flute, oboe, clarinet or saxophone. We take part in musical events such as an annual Save the Children concert in Newbury and a West Berkshire concert in a local theatre for which we often provide soloists, narrators and dancers. The PTA regularly organises fun events such as discos and an annual sponsored walk.
Many sports clubs are available: netball, football, kwik cricket, rounders and tennis. Less regularly we provide swimming for more able and less able, hockey, rugby, athletics and golf.
