The Birmingham Knee and Shoulder Clinic has been established to provide patient focused care and excellence in treating all conditions of the knee and shoulder. We provide a complete service encompassing diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. Arthroscopic, reconstructive and replacement surgery are all performed to the highest standards with regular audit and assessment of results and outcomes.
Diseases of the knee and shoulder are common and second only to that of the spine. Therefore effective treatment of conditions affecting these two joints requires consultant surgeons with high degrees of specialisation.
Surgeons who specialise in diseases of the knee and shoulder alone are well established in the USA and Australia. The link between these two joints is the surgical skills of key hole surgery, reconstruction and replacement surgery.
Detailed description:
All three surgeons of the BKSC are specialists in the knee and shoulder and members of the British Knee and Shoulder Societies. The three surgeons hold NHS posts at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, one of only 4 specialist Orthopaedic Hospitals in the UK. All surgeons are Honorary Clinical Lecturers in Orthopaedics for Birmingham University. Mr Learmonth has recently moved full time into Private Practice at the clinic, but still has Honorary contracts with the NHS.
All three surgeons are fully trained in surgical techniques including the latest minimal access and arthroscopic surgical methods. They are recognized as major leaders at local, national and international level in these subjects All acute, chronic and traumatic conditions of both the knee and shoulder including sports injuries are treated . Traumatic conditions such as fractures, acute ligament ruptures and sports injuries can be dealt with on a urgent basis.
Arthritic conditions and degenerative problems are treated by all available methods including conservative (non-operative) and operative methods. For an overview see the introductory pages for each joint.
