Short profile:
The district covers 250 square miles, with a population of 109, 000 people. Policing the district presents many challenges due to its diverse geographic spread, from the busy old capital city, to the sparsely populated rural locations.
The district is divided into two sections for operational policing purposes: Winchester West covering Winchester city, and Winchester East covering Alresford, Bishops Waltham, Twyford, Denmead, Wickham and Whiteley. These sections are led by an Inspector.
Detailed description:
Response teams based in Winchester and Bishop’s Waltham provide 24 hour a day, seven days a week policing cover for the district. These officers not only respond to 999 calls but also provide a uniformed presence on the streets. There are six Safer Neighbourhood Teams consisting of sergeants, police constables, police community support officers (PCSOs) and Special Constables. It is important that these teams know and are known to their local communities as they are committed to delivering a policing service that reflects the different needs and concerns of our local communities. They seek to involve the public in identifying their main neighbourhood and policing concerns, in being part of joint problem-solving responses, and in holding the neighbourhood policing teams to account.
Chief Inspector Steve Baxter has been in command of Winchester district since September 2010.
Chief Inspector Baxter said “Winchester district is a very safe place to live and work, but we are not complacent. We will be working with our partners and our communities to ensure that we not only prevent and detect crime, but that we are also addressing local priorities and dealing with the issues that matter most to residents and businesses. This joint approach will help in the aim of maintaining a district where crime is low and where people feel safe.”
