Short profile:
The 400 year-old history of the Port in Belfast is inextricably linked with the development and progress of the City of Belfast. Throughout the centuries, the Port’s history recognises the importance of the foresight and bold vision of previous generations of Trustees, Operators and Commissioners in creating the basis of the modern Port.
Part of the Port Division, the Operations Department is composed of the Harbour Master's Office, the Operations Engineering Department [with responsibility for the maintenance of cranes and other equipment], the Safety & Environmental Department and the Belfast Harbour Police.
Detailed description:
Established in 1847, Belfast Harbour is Belfast’s port authority and operates the principal maritime gateway on the island of Ireland. The harbour estate covers an area of 2, 000 acres representing 20% of Belfast City area and is also Northern Ireland’s logistics and distribution hub and home to major businesses including Microsoft, Harland & Wolff, Capita, CitiGroup and Bombardier.
The many benefits offered by Belfast’s Port – its location at the hub of Northern Ireland’s motorway network; location at the centre of population, industry and commerce; modern port facilities; competitive port charges and efficient working practices – have enabled it to attract a wide range of shipping services to the Port providing flexible transport options for the island's importers and exporters and for the travelling public.
