Short profile:

Bedale Police Station is open:

Monday to Thursday from 8.30am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm; Friday from 8.30am to 1pm and 2pm to 4.30pm; Saturday from 9am to 1pm.

North Yorkshire Police came into being back in 1974, although the North Riding of Yorkshire Constabulary dates back to 1856.

The development of policing in England from 1750 can be roughly divided into three phases.

Initially, between about 1750 and 1850, what has become known as the 'Old' Police was in operation. This was a system of amateur/semi-professional parish constables and night watchmen.

Detailed description:

The built environment - in which we all live, work, socialise or simply move through - has a significant part to play in how safe we feel and how easy, or otherwise, crime is to commit.

Understanding how the criminal may take advantage of these opportunities and then causing them to be designed out of future building developments is the role of the Police Architectural Liaison Officer (ALO).

The ALO works closely with the local planning authority. His or her role is to ensure that the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) and Secured By Design are reflected in major planning application decisions.

The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB), an Executive Agency of the Home Office, provides wider access to criminal record information through its disclosure service.

This service enables organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors to make safer recruitment decisions by identifying candidates who may be unsuitable for certain work, especially that involve children or vulnerable adults. The CRB was established under Part V of the Police Act 1997 and was launched in March 2002.

Organisations wishing to use the service can ask successful job applicants to apply for one of two types of check. The type of check required will depend upon the nature of the position. These are called Enhanced and Standard Disclosures, both require a fee but are free of charge to volunteers.

Standard disclosures show current and spent convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings held on the Police National Computer. If the post involves working with children or vulnerable adults, the following may also be searched:

Protection of Children Act (POCA) List.

Protection of Vulnerable Adults (POVA) List.

Information that is held under Section 142 of the Education Act 2002 (formerly List 99).
