Great care is taken to ensure that the patient is comfortable and emphasis is placed on as gentle approach as possible. In addition to the physical treatment I try to encourage a dialogue with the patient to aide the understanding of the condition and its management.
This conversation will normally revolve around: Determining the cause of the condition and how this can be prevented in the future, Management of the condition, Postural guidance, If appropriate and where necessary, exercises, I encourage questions and feedback from patients either during treatments or afterwards by phone.
Detailed description:
Firstly - and strictly confidentially - I will take details of the current problem. I will enquire about general health, past medical history, details of previous injuries, diet, exercise and any other relevant information. Then I will undertake a clinical examination of the patient. This can include testing nerves, muscles, joint mobility and assessing posture.
Occasionally further tests may be required. These may involve x-rays or scans. After the examination and a diagnosis has been made and if appropriate treatment will be given.
Sometime patients may be referred to their GP or other relevant practitioners if osteopathic treatment is not advisable. The initial treatment usually takes about an hour to complete and follow up appointments take about half an hour, sometimes longer. During the examination and treatment patients may wear either underclothes or loose fitting tops and shorts.
