Short profile:
Since its creation in 1927 Beatrix Potter School has continued to provide high standards of education in the community. The schools’ name was derived from the author’s visits to her former Governess who lived by our local common in Baskerville Road and to whom she wrote, using her characters to illustrate her letters. Beatrix Potter also drew inspiration from the varied wildlife she saw on her visits to Wandsworth Common.
The school was founded in 1927 although there was on the site a school before this, this tin (it was located in a corrugated hut) school is recorded (1901), we have recently obtained a picture from a former pupil of 1916 of this tin school. We were re-modelled in 1933 and 1993, its only interruption to its role in providing education for the local community was in 1939 when the school was evacuated to Shamley Green, Guildford until 1943 as a result of the 1939-1945 war.
Detailed description:
We are now the proud owners of a new wing with immense hall and new classroom facilities and a new IT suite protected by a sophisticated alarm service.
The school has gained a reputation for its open, friendly and welcoming environment and for its continued concern for all children.
We seek to teach our children how to learn independently and in co-operation with others. We foster competition for the pursuit of excellence but temper it with an emphasis on the values of thoughtfulness, courtesy and unselfishness to others. For our children to learn they must be happy to be happy there must be achievement and to achieve there must be motivation. Motivation comes with clearly set targets, which are challenging but achievable, and in an environment that fosters care and respect for the individual. We cover all the requirements of the National Curriculum and provide additional areas of study to broaden the range of skills that a child will require in a rapidly changing world. Individual records and continuous assessment provide teacher, child and parent with a clear path of development and an indication of possible difficulties. Our achievements in national tests are consistently above the national average and our special needs policy for children experiencing difficulties and for the more able has been highlighted as sound and excellent professional practice. For parents considering the independent sector the school continues to win places and scholarships above that provided for by the preparatory sector.
We expect and maintain high standards of behaviour, discipline and deportment.
Our children are consistently praised for their behaviour, interest and manners on school outings and school journeys and we are very proud of the way our children present themselves to the outside community.
