Short profile:

This station is not open to the public.

The Crime Operations Department is responsible for conducting all investigations into organised crime and serious crime, including murder and terrorism. Teams of detectives work with in-house specialists, including crime analysts and scientific support officers and staff, to deliver investigations and manage intelligence.

The Legal Services Department supports the organisation through the provision of legal advice on human rights, general policing matters, inquests, judicial review and civil litigation.

Detailed description:

The Criminal Justice Department exists to support the organisation through the effective management of community safety services (e.g. hate crime, youth justice, neighbourhood watch), criminal legislation, and justice development and policy. Criminal Justice also has responsibility for overseeing Policing with the Community and within this remit the Department supports District Commanders in developing Neighbourhood Policing. Much of the work of the Criminal Justice Department is developed in partnership with other organisations and agencies – such as the Government, District Policing Partnerships, Health Trusts and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.

The protection of human rights has always been at the core of policing. The introduction of the Human Rights Act 1998 in October 2000 served to formalise this in a way that had not before existed.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has developed programmes to ensure that all its officers and staff understand the principles of human rights and the obligations placed upon them. This is reflected in the policies, planning and practice of the Service.

We regularly review external changes in the legal interpretation of the European Convention on Human Rights as well as the internal needs of those whose task it is to uphold the law.

The Northern Ireland Policing Board is responsible for monitoring the performance of the Police Service in complying with the Human Rights Act 1998. The Board’s Human Rights Advisors have developed a monitoring framework for human rights, which allows the Board to measure the Police Service’s performance against human rights standards.
