Short profile:
Founded in 1977 in response to the growing number of community-based projects seeking to preserve locally and nationally-important heritage, AIM has grown to become a respected sector group, consulted on national policy and providing a thriving network for members.
Independent museums range from small local organisations, mainly operated by volunteers, to large institutions, many operating as charitable trusts, and represent over half the museum provision in the UK.
AIM Council is consulted regularly by Government and national bodies on museums, heritage and tourism matters, making submissions on behalf of its membership and ensuring they have a voice at national level.
Detailed description:
AIM operates three easily-accessible grant schemes to help members with sustainability, conservation and training. The AIM Sustainability Grant Scheme and the AIM Conservation Grant Scheme are generously supported respectively by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and The Pilgrim Trust. Both schemes have been extremely popular with members, and a total of 90 museum projects have been supported with grants from the two schemes since 2006. The Sustainability Scheme has been backed up by workshops held around the country, which have been well-attended, offering good networking opportunities at the same time. The Bob Harding Training Grants have provided small grants for individuals attending various training courses and schemes.
