Short profile:

Then the craft was developed in Germany as a decorative finish in churches, and caught on in England as a way of imitating marble. By the 18th century scagliola columns were a feature of many important buildings.

The traditional labour-intensive manufacture makes scagliola an expensive medium to work in. By the end of the second world war the introduction of mass produced materials, and the economic ravages of the previous two decades has caused the extinction of the craft world-wide.

The Craft researchers, myself included, have worked since the 1970's to bring about a revival of the craft, essentially to enable the conservation of the existing 18th century work, but in the process to find new ways to employ the material, which has such a grand and fascinating lineage.

Our work results in valuable pieces of craftsmanship following a tradition rooted in the mists of history.

We produce certain standard types, usually based on a real marble or granite.

Examples being Verona Rossa (red), Lapis Lazuli (blue), Malachite (green), Sienna (yellow). Some types of scagliola are traditional stylised figurings, originally derived from actual marble, which have remained unchanged for 200 years.

There are infinite possibilities - colours can be modified - made paler or more intense - figuring can be changed in so many ways.

You probably have an idea of what you are looking for. Maybe you can provide photos or sketches, even a sample of marble. Perhaps you can choose which scagliola you want from our photos, or use our photo library as a starting point. Some clients have invented their own marble figuring! (it is very easy to go wrong

doing this). We are happy to help bring out the best in your designs. One way or another we should be able to meet your requirements. Talk it over with us.
