Ashworth & Thompson was founded in January 1931 by Stanley Ashworth and Frank Thompson in Nottingham city centre. The depression of the thirties, and the war in '39, made trading very difficult and by the end of the Second World War the supplies of picture mouldings in Britain had become very scarce through shortage of materials. Many of the techniques of moulding manufacture had been lost and it has been estimated that the framing trade in Britain didn't return to the levels of the 1920s until the '60s.

After the 2nd World War, Stanley and Frank were joined by Gren Ashworth, and a few years later by Brian Thompson, and through steady growth in the 50s and 60s the Company further established itself as a supplier of quality mouldings, with products from such renowned companies as Lion Brand of Norway, Tranas of Sweden and other leading manufacturers from around the world. Richard Ashworth joined the Company in 1966 and Peter Thompson in 1986. During the 70s and 80s development was seen with the opening of branches in the UK and Ireland. Also during this period, Ashworth & Thompson produced the first full colour catalogue of their mouldings as early as 1974 – years in advance of any other UK supplier. In 1975, the Company moved from the city centre and in 1986 moved again to the purpose built 20, 000 sq.ft premises we operate from today.
