Short profile:
Ashgate Croft is the largest of 10 special schools in Derbyshire and, as such, we offer a full range of opportunities for children and students with special needs aged 2 to 19 years.
We believe that education for our pupils includes not only the National Curriculum but, just as importantly, life skills and social skills. We aim, therefore, to teach pupils the skills necessary for self-care and living that others may take for granted. We want all of our pupils to eventually leave school to become successful members of the wider community, hence our motto is "Building Skills for Life".
We concentrate on providing for individual needs so that all of our pupils can be encouraged to achieve their best. For some this may be walking independently, or perhaps managing to write their own name. For others, it may be gaining a certificate of achievement in literacy or mathematics.
Detailed description:
We believe it is important for all our pupils to feel happy and safe in school, where they are challenged to achieve their best and where they have the opportunity to shine at their own level; both academically and within a wider range of life and social skills.
We want to create an inclusive, forward looking school and resource centre, providing high quality education and care, and support to families, where pupils are valued as individuals and where their Special Educational Needs are met by skilled and committed staff working in partnership with parents/carers, other related services and the wider community.
The majority of our pupils have moderate or severe learning difficulties. They are achieving at below expected levels and would have difficulty coping with a mainstream curriculum. They may find reading and writing a problem or have difficulty with communication or fine and gross motor skills. Sometimes they are socially immature or they may experience health problems.
Some of our pupils have profound and multiple learning difficulties, with severe physical and
sensory disabilities. These pupils are highly dependent on adults for all aspects of their learning as well as their self-care and mobility.
All pupils at Ashgate Croft School have special educational needs. A review of each pupil’s needs is held each year. This is called the Annual Review and these meetings take place on a Tuesday. Parents, carers and all interested professionals are invited. Parents/carers and pupils have opportunity at the Annual Review meeting to make their observations and wishes for the future known. At this meeting the objectives for each child, as detailed on the Statement of Special Educational Needs, are discussed and updated, where applicable. During Year 9, when pupils are 14 years old, a Transition Review is held where representatives from the Connexions Service, Social Services, Health Services and the Local Authority are also invited to attend.
