The principle of the ABCT Aquabelt concept is to condition the feed sludge with a synthetic polyelectrolyte and drain the flocculated sludge over an endless horizontal porus filter belt, before inducing further thickening using a patented ramp device. The thickened sludge is then transported away from the ABCT allowing the filter belt to return via a continuous wash station.

Many liquid and solid mixtures can be separated into different phases by the effects of gravity given enough time. This process can be accelerated using a Centrifuge. The centrifuge is a piece of fast rotating machinery that separates solids from liquids using centrifugal forces thousands of times the force of gravity alone.
