Short profile:

The Archway Herbal Clinic was opened 12 years ago and is one of the busiest herbal medicine clinics in London having treated over 4, 000 patients. It is a charity company affiliated to the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH) providing high quality, low cost, Western medical herbal treatment to the public. We have developed to become a centre of herbal medicine education providing clinical training for students taking a BSc in Herbal Medicine at Middlesex University, and running introductory courses for the general public and professional development courses for health care professionals. Middlesex University's Medicinal Herb Garden sited next to the Archway Herbal Clinic serves as a teaching and learning resource for Herbal Medicine of all kinds. Wildflowers are the 'original pharmacy', the forerunners of most medicinal drugs used today.

Detailed description:

Herbal medicine uses remedies from plants or plant extracts to treat disorders and maintain good health. It’s the origin of present day medicine and is still the most widely-practised form of medicine across the globe with 80 percent of the world's population dependent on herbs for its health. Naturally balanced, herbal medicine is more easily absorbed and less likely to cause unwanted side-effects than pharmaceutical drugs. It’s used to support the body’s own healing mechanisms in order to restore a balanced state of health. Aspirin, the world-wide best selling drug, was produced from a chemical found in a number of herbs including meadowsweet. Both aspirin and meadowsweet reduce pain and fever but, while aspirin can result in stomach irritation and bleeding if taken for too long, meadowsweet can actually help to heal the stomach wall! The Archway Herbal Clinic is one of the busiest clinics in London offering herbal medicine treatment.

We have been open since 1996 and since that time have seen over 4, 000 patients. Herbal medicine is used to promote health. Acute conditions such as headaches, coughs and colds respond well to herbal treatment but herbal medicine is also used to treat a number of common chronic conditions as well as support healing and alleviate symptoms following heart surgery or cancer treatment Herbal medicine can assist with controlling addictions such as smoking. Your first consultation with a herbalist will probably last about 50 minutes. In the training clinics, patients will have their case history taken by a final year student supervised by an experienced practitioner.

You will be asked questions about your current state of health and whether you are taking any medication. You will also be asked about your medical and family history, your lifestyle including diet, and your emotional state. You may have a physical examination as well.
