ANTUR WAUNFAWR

Antur Waunfawr is a leading social enterprise providing employment and training opportunities for people with learning disabilities in their own community. As well as playing an important role in the community, Antur Waunfawr is also a key player in the regeneration of the local economy. Established in 1984, the Antur’s activities have developed significantly and the company currently employs over 70 people and is located on the following sites: Bryn Pistyll – Antur’s original site located in the centre of Waunfawr. Community Housing - Located in, Waunfawr, Caernarfon and Penygroes. Warws Werdd – Our furniture shop on the Cibyn industrial estate, Caernarfon. Caergylchu – commercial and community recycling facility based on the Cibyn industrial estate, Caernarfon.

The establishment of Antur Waunfawr in 1984 stemmed from the vision of one man, R. Gwynn Davies, and the strong support he received from the people of the Waunfawr area. Twenty years ago and more, a charitable company such as Antur Waunfawr that offered people with learning difficulties proper work with a purpose to it, was considered pioneering. Prior to this, the only option available to Learning disabled adults was institutionalised care within specialist centres. Antur Waunfawr demonstrated that, by providing opportunities for learning disabled adults to live and work within their own communities, they would be accepted as equal citizens. During the early years people from every part of the world came to the village of Waunfawr to see this new philosophy at work. Similar ventures were soon established in many areas. By today visitors still come to Waunfawr and Caernarfon. Now that the whole concept has been accepted, however, it is not so much to study the work and the employees, but rather because of the variety of services that are offered there. Over the years the Company's business has developed and by now more than 70 people are employed.
