Short profile:
Gillon Aitken Limited was founded by Gillon Aitken in 1976 and operated as a "one-man band" for several years; early clients included Germaine Greer, Shiva Naipaul, Piers Paul Read, Paul Theroux, Colin Thubron and Gavin Young. In 1984, by acquisition and in partnership with Brian Stone, Gillon Aitken formed an association with Hughes Massie Limited, founded in 1905 and agents inter alia for Agatha Christie and, in the British market only, J. D. Salinger and Harper Lee. Then known as Aitken & Stone Limited, in 1998 the company's name reverted to Gillon Aitken Associates Ltd following Brian Stone's retirement and the sale of the agency rights in the works of Agatha Christie.
Detailed description:
1998 also saw the appointment of Clare Alexander to a prominent role in the affairs of the agency, whose strong development in recent years has owed much to her experience and contribution as it has to the long-standing direction of Sally Riley in the area of foreign language rights, on which the company has traditionally placed much emphasis.
The Translation Rights Department at Aitken Alexander Associates is run by Sally Riley and working alongside her are Sophie Legrand and Chaska Collins.
While Sally has overall responsibility for the department the specific territories that she handles are France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Spain, all of Scandinavia, Israel, Russia and the Baltic States.
Lesley Thorne handles the dramatic film and television rights for the agency. For any queries regarding the availability of such rights in any of the books we represent please contact Lesley or her assistant Leah Middleton. Lesley also represents several of the agency's existing literary clients for screenplays and teleplays and now accepts script submissions from writers outside the agency.
