An acupuncturist works by stimulating precise points along the meridians to restore your flow of chi and return you to full health. Many people actually describe a tingling sensation along the exact pathway of a meridian, without even knowing it exists. We work in a holistic way. This means understanding you as a complex and unique human being, as well as understanding your symptoms and your medical history. You have probably noticed that when you are stressed or overworked you are more likely to become ill. Conversely when you are on top of the world, your health is rarely an issue. For this reason, finding out what makes you thrive, as well as how you can avoid stress is a vital part of the treatment process. Everyone is a unique individual and for that reason we will select points particularly relevant to your needs.

Two people with identical conditions will not necessarily have the same points needled. We do not work to a rigid 'formula' of points, but will tailor each treatment plan for each individual patient. You will experience no more than a momentary dull ache. Both during and after treatment most people describe a feeling of relaxation and invigoration. Many patients are wary or afraid of needles. As experienced acupuncturists we are aware of, and acknowledge, the fears some of our patients have. Needle fear/phobia often stems from the use of large gauge hypodermic needles used to give injections or draw blood.

Acupuncture needles are different. They are solid (not hollow), flexible and very fine, about the diameter of 2 human hairs. The needles we use are surgical steel, sterile and disposable. In Five Element acupuncture we generally do not leave the needles in situ. We insert them on specific points on the meridian (energy pathway) to connect with the energy, then remove them after 1 or 2 seconds. You will feel a momentary dull ache, or tug as the needle connects with the energy.
