Short profile:

The regeneration partnership was formed in August 2000 when a total of £13.75 million was awarded to Calderdale by Regional Development Agency, Yorkshire Forward, to oversee the management and implementation of the Government’s Single Regeneration Budget (SRB).

Taking the name Action Halifax in early 2001, Calderdale Council approached the partnership, on behalf of Local Strategic Partnership Calderdale Forward, to manage a £7.7 million budget and run the European Community funded URBAN II Programme: 'Halifax: An Enterprise Town'.

In 2003 a further £10, 000 was secured through the Home Office Community Cohesion Fund enabling Action Halifax to organise three key events in the areas of; Boothtown, Pellon and Siddal and as a result, help form and establish community groups in these areas. Across 7 years we will have managed an investment programme worth £70 million.

Detailed description:

Our main aims and objectives include:

To promote social, economic and environmental regeneration within a defined area of Halifax.

To combat poverty and deprivation in Halifax by creating and capturing sustainable employment opportunities from the development of an innovative enterprise culture rooted in community-led urban renewal.

To lead a partnership approach involving local residents, community groups, public, private and voluntary sector organisations.

To seek support and manage funding contributing to the regeneration of the area.

To maximise the growth of local employment through programmes to support the development of businesses.

To create new opportunities for learning and skill development.

To exploit opportunities for urban renaissance, through measures to enhance the appearance, feeling of security and overall vitality of Halifax Town Centre.

To address social exclusion through focussed action to meet the needs of the local community.

To address issues relating to substance misuse in Halifax Town Centre.

Action Halifax was registered as a Limited Company in 2002 enabling all existing partners to remain actively involved. Our work and direction is led by the board of directors and URBAN Programme Monitoring Committee (PMC) who are responsible for overseeing the delivery of programmes. The board meets every three months to make funding decisions on proposed projects and to review overall performance of the partnership.

Operating on a ‘not for profit’ basis, Action Halifax ensures that any surpluses generated go directly back into our work – there are no payments to shareholders or Directors.

Although the Board of Directors and URBAN Programme Monitoring Committee (PMC) are technically separate bodies, membership was brought together in 2004 to aid better strategic co-ordination of both main funding Programmes.
